On December 15, 2024, the “August 14, 2018 Memorial” dedicated to the 43 victims of the Morandi Bridge collapse was inaugurated, with the artistic and architectural direction entrusted to the Stefano Boeri Architetti studio. This space, conceived as a place of respect, memory, testimony, and protest, includes the Museum of Memory, the Bioclimatic Greenhouse, and the surrounding gardens along the Polcevera riverbank, located near the former Pier 9 of the Morandi Bridge, considered a symbolic location evoking the catastrophe of August 14, 2018.
For the preparation of the executive project, the company Palaser Srl selected the Professional JV composed of Sibilla Associati Srl, Rocca Bacci Associati Snc, Neostudio Architetti Associati, and Dr. Agronomist Paola Spagnolli.
Studio Cattivelli, Eng. Fausto, on behalf of the contractor PALASER S.R.L., produced specialist reports with static and structural calculations for the curtain walls and glass roofing of the Bioclimatic Greenhouse, which are integrated into the main steel structural work designed by Studio Sibilla Associati; the Client requested controlled indoor climate performance to ensure brightness, temperature, and humidity suitable for tropical vegetation, using specific parameters set by the specialist agronomist, achieved through the use of low-emissivity "blue line" glass and filtering blinds on both the vertical walls and the roof.
The southern part of the project, which houses the Bioclimatic Greenhouse, is a multi-purpose space featuring a bar and greenhouse directly connected to the museum; the areas are separated by two imposing glass walls. The Greenhouse space is designed as a new, enveloping topography crossed by a zig-zag path that connects with the outdoor garden. Therefore, the multi-purpose area serves as a transitional environment between indoors and outdoors, with soil contours and vegetation evoking the relationship between nature and artifice, reflecting the complexity of the territory and its history, characterized by different soils, variable orography, terracing, and infrastructural challenges. Inside, the selected collection of tree ferns and palms includes 43 different species in memory of the victims of the tragedy.
